The truth about Amsterdam weekend parking

Many European cities reduce their parking rates on weekends. Amsterdam does not. Saturday in the centre of Amsterdam is priced identically to a Tuesday morning: €8.05 per hour. Sunday is the same in most central zones, charged from 9:00 until midnight.

This surprises a lot of visitors — and it costs them. A full Saturday in the Grachtengordel (canal ring), say 10:00 to 20:00, costs €80.50 in street parking. That's before you've bought a coffee or visited a museum.

Amsterdam knows tourists come on weekends. That's exactly why the rates haven't budged.

Is anything different on weekends?

A few things. Some outer zones in Amsterdam (Nieuw-West, most of Noord, parts of Oost) do have reduced or no Sunday charging. If your hotel is in one of these areas and you can park near your accommodation, check the local sign carefully.

Also: some garages offer "weekend specials" — a flat rate for Friday-Sunday night parking. These are worth checking on the Q-Park and Parkbee apps if you're staying in the city. The deals appear and disappear, so compare prices each time.

The best weekend parking options, cheapest first

Option 1: P+R + public transport (€1-3 per day)
By far the cheapest. All 8 Amsterdam P+R locations charge €1/24hr. Park Friday evening, pay €2 for the weekend. Your only other cost is metro/tram fares — roughly €4-6 per day for two people travelling together.

Option 2: Hotel garage deal (varies)
Call your hotel before booking and ask if they have a parking arrangement. Many central hotels have deals with nearby garages at €20-35/day. This is much more than P+R but much less than street parking, and you're right at your accommodation.

Option 3: Pre-booked central garage (from ~€25/day weekends)
Apps like Parkmobile and Q-Park sometimes have weekend specials. Check before you arrive. The Jaarbeurs-style weekend flat-rate deals are worth hunting for if you need to be central.

Option 4: Amsterdam Noord + ferry (from €1/day)
P+R Noord in Amsterdam Noord charges €1/24hr. The free GVB ferry to Amsterdam Centraal takes 5-8 minutes and runs very frequently. Noord has massively improved in recent years — restaurants, NDSM Wharf, the Eye Film Museum. You could even enjoy Noord on Saturday and cross into the old centre on Sunday.

What a weekend costs in each scenario

Let's say you arrive Friday evening and leave Sunday evening — approximately 48 hours.

Street parking near Dam Square: 48 hours × €8.05 = €386.40. This would be genuinely insane. Nobody should do this.

Central covered garage (e.g. Q-Park De Bijenkorf): ~€60 per day × 2 = €120. Very expensive but walking-distance central.

Mid-range central garage (pre-booked): ~€35 per day × 2 = €70. Better, especially with a pre-booking discount.

Mobihub Rembrandtpark (inner city, cheapest covered): ~€10 per day × 2 = €20. Plus tram fares (€2-3 each direction). Total ~€30.

P+R (any location): €1 × 2 days = €2. Plus metro/tram fares (roughly €8-12 for two people over two days). Total €10-14 for the weekend.

Saturday vs Sunday — is one better?

If you have flexibility, Sunday is slightly better for driving into Amsterdam — not because it's cheaper, but because there's less traffic. The morning rush that fills garages on Saturday isn't there on Sunday. If you need to park in a central garage, arriving Sunday morning often means better availability and sometimes lower online rates due to less demand.

That said, the actual saving on a Sunday vs a Saturday is zero unless you find a specific garage deal.

Use Parkmobile app

Check rates before arriving. The app shows live prices for both street and garage parking. Weekend specials appear here first.

Arrive Friday late evening

Some garages cap the nightly charge. Arriving after 22:00 on Friday and leaving before 08:00 Monday can sometimes save on the full weekend rate.
